2024 Photographer of the Year

f8 Competition Group

Congratulations to Laura Blake for her achievement this year, a rare joint win with another club member. The excellent images she submitted in our monthly competitions, and the high scores they achieved, has resulted in this club honor. We can’t wait to see what you do next year!

I was born, raised and educated in beautiful Appalachia. When I was 20 years old, I saw Colorado on a cross country drive to Arizona and I knew immediately that Colorado was going to be my home. Three years later, I moved to Winter Park, CO as a ski bum. The rest is history, as they say.

My interest in people led me to various occupations including Hairdressing, Ski instructor for disabled people, Optician and Training Coordinator for caregivers of the elderly. Today, I work (one on one) with people diagnosed with various Dementias.

My first camera was a Canon Rebel (kit lens 18-55mm) cropped frame! I moved up to a full frame Canon a few years ago and I shoot, most often, with my two favorite lenses, a macro and a telephoto. I use my macro (100 mm) for shooting bugs and the telephoto (100 – 400mm) on birds. The 100mm is a great portrait lens as well.

I am intrigued with the tiny world that I see with the macro lens. The most difficult bit in macro photography (after focus, of course) is the lack of light. This summer, I will be tramping through gardens and wetlands looking for all things small and crawly!

Enjoy these fantastic images from Laura.
